IN CLOSING

Thank you for taking time to view this information. It is our hope that we have provided you with a new awareness and understanding of gangs. However, realizing why some youth are vulnerable to recreating a family atmosphere through gang membership is only the first step. We believe that our real challenge is for all social groups - parents, schools, police, social service agencies, courts, and citizens - to work in concert to address the rise and spread of gangs in our communities.

Responding to gangs will require a systematic, comprehensive and collaborative approach. Our collective efforts must incorporate a three-pronged approach that includes the strategies of prevention, intervention and suppression. While each strategy has its place in the model, the National Foundation for Abused and Neglected Children believes that prevention is our greatest hope. Only by keeping children from joining gangs can we truly hope to halt the presence of gangs and all that they represent.

If you would like more information on what you can do to help combat gangs and crime in your community, or to send a tax deductible monetary gift, write the National Foundation for Abused and Neglected Children at P.O. Box 1841 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1841.
